Reprimand and punish (謫罰: the upper character has the fanqie [ʈ- + -ɛk] 陟革. Mao’s commentary to the Shijing says: ‘Zhe means to blame one another.’ The Shuowen says: ‘It takes “speech” [言] as its radical with 啇 as its phonetic component.’ The lower character has the fanqie [b- + -at] 煩韈. The Shuowen says: ‘It takes 刀 [knife] and 詈 [revile]; the character 詈 takes 冈 and 言.’ Writing it with 四 is a corrupt abbreviation.)
