The lower character has the fanqie xíng + gé [hé]; Yunquan says: 'To examine and seek out'; Shenglei says: 'To exhaustively probe'; Shuowen jiezi says: 'Real; to examine an affair and arrive at its truth; derived from 西 with 𨈡 phonetic'; 幵 is pronounced with the fanqie xiá + xián [jiān]; 西 is pronounced with the fanqie xiā + gǔ [xià]).
