凋落 ("to wither and fall": the upper character has the fanqie 丁遙 [diāo]. Du's commentary to the Zuozhuan says: "Diāo means damaged." Jia's commentary to the Guoyu says: "Exhausted." Shuowen says: "Half damaged." It is composed of 冫 with 周 as the phonetic; 冫 is pronounced 氷. In the scripture text it is written as 彫, which is an erroneous usage. The lower character has the fanqie 即各 [luò]. Shuowen says: "The withering and fading of plants and trees." It is composed of 廾—pronounced cǎo—with 洛 as the phonetic. In the scripture text it is written with two dots as 落, an abbreviated corruption of cursive script.)
