Pecking and devouring (啄啖: the first character has the fanqie 陟 + 角; it is the standard character in character dictionaries. In the treatise text it is written as 啄, which is a popular variant. The Guangya says: “啄 means to bite.” The Shuowen says: “Birds eating; classified under the radical 'mouth' (口) with 豖 phonetic.” The second character has the fanqie 談 + 敢; it is the standard character for eating. In the treatise text it is written as 噉, which is a popular character in common use. The Guangya says: “噉 means to eat.” The Shuowen states it is classified under the radical 'mouth' (口) with 炎 phonetic).
