Planting and shoots (栽𣡌: the upper character has the fanqie z[ài] + [l]ái; Zheng's commentary on the Liji says: '栽 means to plant.' The Chunqiu zhuan says: 'The vegetable gardens of Chu and neighbourhoods of Cai were planted.' The Shuowen gives the same meaning; it takes mù as radical and zāi as phonetic. Zāi has the same sound as above. The lower character has the fanqie [àn] + [g]é; Guo Pu's commentary on the Fangyan says: 'Niè means remnants.' The Shuowen says: '𣡌 means the stump remaining after felling a tree; it takes mù as radical and xiàn as phonetic.' In ancient script it is written as 枿 or as 櫱. The treatise text writes 糵 with the sound bǎi, which is incorrect).
