彫斲 (The first character has the fanqie pronunciation 鳥 + 僚 [diāo]. The Kaosheng says that 彫 means 'to decorate'. Kong [Anguo's] commentary on the Shangshu says that 彫 means 'to paint'. Gu Yewang says it means 'to engrave and carve'. The Guangya says it means 'to engrave'. The Wenzidian shuo says that 彫 means 'to carve ornamental patterns, to engrave and paint'; it has the radical 彡 with 周 as phonetic; 彡 has the pronunciation 杉. The second character has the fanqie pronunciation 竹 + 角 [zhuó]. Kong [Anguo's] commentary on the Shangshu says that 斲 means 'to pare down'. Du [Yu's] commentary on the Zuozhuan says: 'Those who wield the adze are artisans.' The Shuowen says it means 'to chop'; it has the radical 斤 with 𠁁 as phonetic; 𠁁 has the fanqie pronunciation 投 + 斗).
