Soaring and leaping (飜騰: the upper character [飜] is pronounced fu-yuan fan; the Guangya says: "飜 means flying." Gu Yewang says: "飜 means flying high away." The Shuowen says: "Takes 飛 as semantic and 番 as phonetic; it is also written as 翻." The lower character [騰] is pronounced deng-deng fan; the Han Commentary on the Shijing says: "騰 means to mount; there is none who does not mount the deep." The Guangya says: "騰 means to gallop." The Shuowen says: "To gallop; it takes 馬 as semantic and the abbreviated 騰 as phonetic." Those written with 勝 taking 舟 or 月 are incorrect).
