Traveling merchant and resident trader (𧷮賈): The upper character has the fanqie shi + zhang (shāng); the lower character has the fanqie gu + ku (gǔ). In the Zhouli, the sixth of the nine professions is called traveling merchant and resident trader (𧷮賈). Zheng Xuan says: ‘Itinerant selling is called 𧷮; sitting and trading is called 賈.’ The Kaogongji says: ‘Circulating the precious and unusual goods of the four quarters to supply them is called traveling merchants and wayfarers (𧷮旅).’ Zheng Xuan says: ‘They are itinerant merchant guests.’ The Shuowen says: ‘Itinerant selling; it takes “cowrie” (貝) with an abbreviated shāng (商) as phonetic.’ In the sūtras it is commonly written as 商, which is an error; it should properly add “cowrie” (貝) to be correct. Zheng Xuan says: ‘Circulating local products is called 𧷮; resident selling is called 賈.’ Du Yu says: ‘Gǔ means to sell.’ The Kaosheng says: ‘Sitting and trading; gǔ means price.’ The Shuowen says: ‘Gǔ means a marketplace.’ Those who pronounce it with the fanqie jia + ya are incorrect.
