Joking and bantering (戲謔): The upper character has the fanqie xu + ji (xì); the lower character has the fanqie xiang + nüe (xuè). The Mao Commentary to the Shijing says on ‘Dare not make sport or be at ease’: ‘Xìyù (戲豫) means idle ease.’ The Shuowen says: ‘A division of the three armies; it takes “halberd” (戈) with xū (虛) as phonetic.’ The sūtras writing it with xū as 戱 is incorrect. The Mao Commentary says: ‘Xuèxuè (謔謔) means joyful and happy.’ Also, ‘Good at teasing and joking’ refers to this. The Shuowen says: ‘Xuè also means play; it takes “speech” (言) with nüè (虐) as phonetic.’
