Sting and gnaw (螫噉; first character shu + zhi fanqie, or he + ge fanqie, both readings are admissible; the Shuowen says: "Insects injecting venom; scorpions." It takes the insect radical (虫) with she (赦) phonetic. Second character dan + gan fanqie; the Kaosheng says: "To eat." The Erya says: "Dan (噉) means to swallow." The Gujin zhengzi says: "Dan means to eat." It takes the mouth radical (口) with gan (敢) phonetic. The Shuowen says: "Dan means to chew." Sometimes written 淡 or 啗, both identical.).
