To mould and entice (陶誘: the first character has the fanqie 徒勞 [táo]. The second character has the fanqie 由首 [yǒu]; He Yan's commentary on the Analects says: 'Yòu means to advance; this refers to the Master advancing and encouraging people with the correct Way.' The Zilin says: 'Yòu is like [xuan]; it also means to entice.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'To guide.' It takes 'speech' [言] as radical and has xiù [秀] as phonetic; it is also written with 'shield' [盾] as 䛻, and also written as 羑, both with the same sound and meaning; [xuan] has the fanqie 先九 [xiǎn]).
