This is a metaphor for the Dharma Master wishing to crush the heterodox factions: he first made himself thoroughly versed in the other tradition and only then sought victory; concealing his identity and changing his robes, for nine years he lived among the Huangzhong Daoists, serving as a Daoist leader, thoroughly examining the bogus arts of the Three Zhangs and personally performing the talismans, jiao rituals, and petitions, completely penetrating their origins before returning to the root and composing treatises, like a fierce beast subduing itself to the cage).
