Python / serpent (蟒蛇) (The first [character] has the fanqie mò + bǎng [mǎng]. The Erya states: 'The mǎng is the king of serpents.' Guo [Pu]'s commentary states: 'It is the largest of serpents, hence it is called mǎngshé.' The Shuowen states: 'It derives from bug (虫) with the phonetic mǎng (莽).' The character mǎng (莽) in the Shuowen derives from dog (犬) with the phonetic 𦬇; 𦬇 has the same pronunciation as above, deriving from doubled grass (艸), written in seal script as 茻. In the sūtra text it is written with huì (卉) as 莾, which is an error. The second [character] has the fanqie shè + zhē [shé]. The Mao Shijing states: 'Only vipers and only serpents.' The Zhouyi states: 'Serpents belong to the class of creeping things (zhì).' The Shuowen states: 'It derives from bug (虫) with the phonetic tā (它).' In the sūtra text it is written as 蛇, which is a popular character. 它 has the fanqie tú + hé [tuó]. 豸 has the sound zhì).
