麁歰（上麤字正作麤從三鹿說文不細也今省去二鹿作此麤字下色立反說文云歰不滑也字從四止二止倒書二止正書經文從水三止作澁非）。

Coarse and rough (麁歰) (The first [character] for 'coarse' is properly written as 麤, deriving from three deer (鹿). The Shuowen states: 'Not fine.' Nowadays two deer are omitted to write this character 麁. The second [character] has the fanqie sè + lì [sè]. The Shuowen states: '歰 means not smooth.' The character derives from four stops (止): two stops written inverted and two stops written upright. In the sūtra text it is written with water (水) and three stops as 澁, which is incorrect).
