To feel / to grope (捫摸) (The first [character] has the fanqie méi + bēn [mén]. The commentary on the Mao Shijing states: 'Mén means to hold.' The Shenglei also says: 'To grope (摸).' The Shuowen states: 'It derives from hand (手) with the phonetic mén (門).' The second [character] has the fanqie mù + bó [mō]. The Fangyan states: 'Mō and cē (𢱢) mean to stroke / caress.' The Shuowen states: 'It derives from hand (手) with the phonetic mò (莫).' In the sūtra text, hand is placed beneath mò to write 摹, which has the sound mó, and also means to stroke. 摸 is also sometimes pronounced móu).
