挻埴（上傷延反下承力反淮南子云陶人之挻埴也許注云押也孔注尚書云埴黏土也如淳曰挻擊也埴柔也和也謂柔土作器也說文挻字從手埴字從土竝形聲字經文二字皆從土作埏埴上字誤也）。

挻埴 (kneading clay: the first character is *sh[āng]-y[án]* fan; the second is *ch[éng]-l[ì]* fan. The Huainanzi states: “The potter's kneading of clay.” Xu's commentary says: “To press down.” Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: “埴 [*zhí*] is sticky clay.” Ru Chun says: “挻 [*shān*] means to beat; 埴 [*zhí*] means soft and harmonious; it refers to softening earth to make vessels.” The Shuowen jiezi states that the character 挻 is classified under 手 [hand], and the character 埴 is classified under 土 [earth]; both are phono-semantic compound characters. In the sūtra text both characters are written under 土 [earth] as 埏埴; the upper character is erroneous).
