跏趺 (for the first character, pronounced 加 [jiā]; for the second character, pronounced 夫 [fū]. Both characters are conventionally used in common practice; standardly they are written as the two forms 加跗. Zheng's commentary on the Yili says: “跗 is the upper side of the foot.” Gu Yewang says: “The top of the foot.” It is noted that the Jingangding yuqie yi says: “There are two kinds of seated postures, namely full cross-legged (全加) and half cross-legged (半加). To sit crossing both legs is full cross-legged; to sit with foot atop thigh is half cross-legged. These refer to postures for subduing Māra, auspiciousness, and so forth, as explained previously.”)
