阿練若（或云阿練兒或云阿蘭若或云阿蘭那皆梵語訛轉耳正云阿蘭孃義譯云寂靜處或云無諍地所居不一或住砂磧山林壙野或塚間寒林皆出聚落一俱盧舍之外遠離喧噪之處也）。

阿練若 (also written 阿練兒, 阿蘭若, or 阿蘭那; all are corrupt Sanskrit transliterations. Correctly it is araṇya, translated in meaning as 'solitary and quiet place' or 'place free of contention'. The dwellings are varied: some reside on gravel sands, mountain forests, open wildernesses, or among charnel grounds and cold groves; all are at least one krośa beyond villages and towns, far removed from noise and clamour.)
