伺斷（上相吏反切韻伺候也玉篇察也釋名伺思也下從管反韻英云絕也說文截也從斤𢇍古文絕字也經文作斷或作断皆訛也）。

伺斷 (The upper character has the fanqie 相吏 [x- + -(l)i = sì]; the Qieyun says: 'To watch for; to spy.' The Yupian says: 'To inspect.' The Shiming says: '伺 means 思 [sī, to deliberate].' The lower character has the fanqie 從管 [c- + -(k)wan = duàn]; the Yunying says: 'To cut off.' The Shuowen says: 'To sever; formed with the classifier 斤 [axe] and 𢇍, an ancient script form of the character 絕 [to cut off].' In the sūtra text it is written as 斷 or as 断, both of which are corrupt).
