蔓延 (for the first character, [màn], fanqie 無怨 [m- + -ʉɐn = mʉɐn/màn]. The Yunying says: “蔓 refers to the sprouts of melons.” For the second character, 延, the Erya says: “延 means long; 延 means to draw out.” It is noted that 蔓延 is like creeping vines spreading and drawing out without break. The second character 延 is also written 莚, pronounced 余戰 [j- + -iɛn = jiɛn/yán]. The Guangya says: “蔓 means long; 莚 means widespread.” Both characters take 草 as radical.)
