It takes 'speech' [as semantic component] and di as phonetic. The second character has the fanqie [reading] ta + ding [ting]. The Kaosheng says: "To wait." The Shuowen [jiezi] says: "To examine." The dictionary says: "To deliberate." It also means to listen. The Shuowen [jiezi] says it takes 𢛳, 'ear', and ren as phonetic. 𢛳 is pronounced de. 壬 has the fanqie [reading] ta + ding [ting]. It means to examine and grasp the sound with one's ears. 壬, being phonetic, also has the fanqie ta + ding [ting]).
