乾燥 [Dry and parched]: The upper [character] has the fanqie 古寒 (gǔ + hán = gān); the Ziyang says, “Its original sound was 䖍, but it is now borrowed for dry versus wet.” The ancient script derives it from 水 as 漧. The lower [character] has the fanqie 蘇道 (sū + dào = sào); the Yupian says, “Dried by fire.” The Qieyun says, “乾 is also parched.”
