船舶 (the first character is sh[í] + chu[ān] fanqie; the Fangyan says: "East of the Pass it is called chuán; west of the Pass it is called zhōu." The Shuowen jiezi says: "Composed with the boat radical and a simplified yán phonetic." Yán is y[ǔ] + zhu[ān] fanqie; the yán of yánlù ("along the way") and the qiān of qiānxī ("lead and tin") are all based on this. The Vinaya text uses the gōng radical, writing 船 or 舡, both being vernacular characters. The second character is b[àng] + m[ò] fanqie; the Qieyun says: "A large ocean ship."
