[Mahākāśyapa] The Wenju says: "Here translated as 'Great Turtle Clan'. In previous generations his ancestors studied the Way, and an efficacious turtle carrying a sage's diagram responded to them; taking their clan name from this virtue, they are therefore called the Turtle Clan. Contemporaries mostly addressed him by his clan name. In truth he had a personal name, which was Pippala. His parents prayed to a tree deity and bore a son, hence naming him Pippala. Regarding 'Great': in terms of what it expresses, he was called Mahākāśyapa due to great wisdom, great virtue, and a great mind. In terms of external circumstances, many among the Buddha's disciples were named Kāśyapa, such as the Daśabala [Kāśyapa] and the three Kāśyapa brothers. Among those of the same clan name, this venerable one was the most senior, so 'Great' was prefixed to distinguish him." Kāśyapa is also translated as 'Drinking Light'. The Wenju says: "Kāśyapa's bodily radiance could also outshine external objects. Paramārtha translated it as 'Light Waves'; the bodily light of ancient sages surged like flames and could outshine other lights."
