【鄔（安古）波離】有翻化生，或翻上首，以其持律為眾紀綱，故名。優波釐，或翻近執，以佛為太子時，彼為親近執事之臣。古人云：「佛之家人。」非也。訛云優波離。

[Upāli] Some translate it as 'Transformationally Born', or as 'Foremost Leader', so named because he maintained the vinaya as the guiding rule for the community. Upāli is also translated as 'Close Attendant', because when the Buddha was the crown prince, he was a minister who attended closely to his affairs. The ancients said: 'A retainer of the Buddha'—which is incorrect. Upāli is an erroneous rendering.
