[Rāhula] Kumārajīva said: "When an asura eclipses the moon, he is named Rāhula. In Qin, this means 'Obstructor', referring to his obstructing the moon's brightness. Because Rāhula stayed in his mother's womb for six years, being obstructed, he was named after this." The Xiyu ji says: "Rāhula was formerly called Luohuluo, and also Luoyun; both are erroneous abbreviations. Here translated as 'Seizing the Sun'." The Jingming shu says: "Some translate it as 'Palace Born'. When the prince left home and the princess remained in the palace, how could she have become pregnant? Later, the Buddha together with King Śuddhodana verified that he was indeed the prince's son, truly born of the palace, and thus he was named Palace Born."
