【Kāśyapa Mātaṅga】A native of Central India of the brāhmaṇa caste. In his youth he was perceptive and astute, with an attractive bearing. He was widely learned, exceptionally versed in the sutras and vinaya, profound and outstanding in his thinking, penetrating the subtle and fathoming the profound. In setting forth texts and analyzing principles, his comprehension surpassed the mundane. He once traveled to Western India, where a small state invited Mātaṅga to lecture on the Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra. Soon after, a neighboring state raised an army to invade its borders, but repeatedly met with obstacles and the soldiers could not advance. Suspecting that the state possessed extraordinary arts, they secretly sent spies to observe. They saw only the ruler and ministers peacefully listening together to the scripture he lectured on, which expounded the method by which the Earth Spirit King protects the realm. Seeing this miraculous efficacy, that state sued for peace and sought the Dharma. At that time, Cai Yin and others earnestly invited Mātaṅga, and Mātaṅga came with Yin and the others to see the Emperor, passing away in Luoyang.
