[Dharmagupta] In the language of the Sui: "Dharma-Secret" (Fami). A man of the Southern Indian realm. In the tenth year of the Kaihuang era, he arrived at Guazhou. Emperor Wen invited him into the capital's monastery; his doctrinal principles were fitting and correct, matching the subtle purport of the sūtras. Moreover, he established himself in compassion and forbearance, and respectful harmony formed his nature; his mind was never outside the Way, and his conduct preceded his speech; the ground of his precepts was level and calm, and the water of his samādhi was deep and pure. In sūtras he penetrated the origins of words, and in treatises he probed the meaning of sounds; his demeanor was auspicious and upright, his diligence and integrity lofty and vigorous. The sound of his recitations continued from dusk to dawn; his Dharma words were well versed in both inner and outer [learning]. He favored dwelling in quietude and simplifying affairs; he valued having few desires and bringing an end to seeking; he never wearied of instructing others, prioritizing this above benefiting himself. When Emperor Yang established the capital in the Eastern Capital, he set up a translation bureau.
