【純陀】舊云：本名純陀。後大眾稱德，號為妙義。《補注》云：「不應名德兩分，純陀是西音，妙義乃此語。」

【Chunda】(Cunda) Formerly it was said: his original name was Chunda. Later the great assembly praised his virtue and entitled him Miaoyi (Wonderful Meaning). The Buzhu says: "One should not divide name and virtue into two: Chunda is the Western sound; Miaoyi is the translation here."
