[Sudatta]: Also written Xiudatuo, or Posuxidatuo. The Xiyu ji says: "In the language of the Tang, it means 'Good Giver' (Shanshe), or 'Delighting in Giving' (Leshe). The old transcription Suda was an error; the correct name is Sudatta. He was a great minister of King Prasenajit, benevolent and astute, able to disperse what he accumulated, relieving the destitute and aiding the poor, pitying the solitary and assisting the aged. His contemporaries praised his virtue and titled him 'Anāthapiṇḍada' (Provider to the Destitute)." Mencius says: "An old man without a wife is called widower (guan); an old woman without a husband is called widow (gua); an old person without children is called solitary (du); a youth without a father is called orphan (gu). These four are the destitute and helpless people of the world." Now this elder provided for and aided destitute and solitary people; hence his name, Provider to the Destitute (Jigudu).
