[Kukkuṭa] This is the sound of a fowl. Kukkuṭa is translated as rooster. The Yilin says: 'Sun represents the rooster; when the rooster crows at the proper season, the household is joyful and without worry.' The Xijing zaji says: 'In the time of Emperor Cheng, the kingdom of Yuechang in Jiaozhi presented a long-crowing rooster; checking it against the clepsydra, it did not err from the sundial's marks.' Tian Rao said: 'The rooster wears a comb on its head, which is civility (wen); it bears spurs upon its feet, which is martial prowess (wu); it fights its enemies, which is courage (yong); finding food it calls others, which is righteousness (yi); crowing without missing the hour, it is trustworthiness (xin). The rooster possesses five virtues, yet you still boil and eat it, because it is close at hand.' The Śūraṅgama-sūtra says: 'Like a rooster's later crowing, when one looks toward the eastern direction, there is already an exquisite glow.' Changshui explains: 'The rooster's second crowing means dawn is about to break.' Gushan explains: 'The three virtues of nirvāṇa are called the heaven of supreme meaning. Previously, when feeling and perception were exhausted, realization seemed still far off, like the rooster's first crowing when the sky is still dark. Now that the skandha of mental formations is exhausted and only the skandha of consciousness remains, clear awakening will not be long, like the rooster's later crowing when the sky has an exquisite glow.' Yan Zhitui of Qi said: 'In the Liang dynasty there was a man who regularly washed his hair mixed with egg whites to make his hair glossy and black, breaking twenty or thirty eggs each time he washed. When facing death, only chirping sounds were heard from within his hair, like the voices of several thousand chicks.'
