【悉檀】南嶽師以悉檀,例大涅槃,華梵兼稱。悉是華言,檀是梵語。悉之言遍,檀翻為施。佛以四法,遍施眾生,故名悉檀。《妙玄》云:「世界悉檀歡喜益,為人悉檀生善益,對治悉檀破惡益,第一義悉檀入理益。」妙樂云:「則前二教,及別地前,但屬三悉。引入今經,第一義悉。」

[Siddhānta] Master Nanyue, taking siddhānta by analogy with Mahāparinirvāṇa, regarded it as a combined Chinese and Sanskrit expression. Xi (悉) is Chinese, and dān (檀) is Sanskrit. Xi means universal, and dān translates as giving (dāna). The Buddha universally bestows four dharmas upon sentient beings; hence it is called siddhānta. The Miaoxuan says: "The worldly siddhānta has the benefit of joy; the individual siddhānta has the benefit of generating goodness; the counteractive siddhānta has the benefit of destroying evil; the ultimate truth siddhānta has the benefit of entering principle." The Miaole says: "Thus the previous two teachings, as well as the stages prior to the bhūmis in the Separate Teaching, belong only to the three siddhāntas; being guided into the present sūtra, it is the ultimate truth siddhānta."
