[Upagupta] Also called Youbojueduo; this translates as Great Protection. Or called Gupta. He appeared one hundred years after the Buddha's extinction and attained the fruit of no-more-learning. The Xiyu ji says: 'Upagupta, in the speech of Tang, means Near Protection. Five or six li east of the city in the kingdom of Mathurā, there is a stone chamber among the crags, over twenty feet high and over thirty feet wide, with four-inch fine tallies piled up inside. When the Venerable Upagupta preached the Dharma and transformed beings, only when a husband and wife both realized the fruit of arhatship would he deposit a tally; if they were from different rooms or different clans, even if they attained realization, he did not record it.'
