[Dīpaṃkara]: Also called Dīpaṃkara; here translated as Burning Lamp (Randeng). The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: "When the prince was born, the light around his entire body was like a lamp, so he was called Burning Lamp; even up until he attained buddhahood, he was also named Burning Lamp." The character deng in the Shuowen is written with the metal radical. Xu Xuan says: "Placing a candle in a ding vessel is therefore called deng." The Shenglei says: "One with feet is called ding; one without feet is called deng." Therefore, the Ruiying jing translates it as Dingguang (Lamp Light). The Zhihua says: "Ding is pronounced ding; it is of the genus of lamps. In ancient translations, the phonetic rendering differed; some said Randeng, others Dingguang. The words differ, but the meaning is the same; thus it should follow the metal radical." When Śākyamuni was practicing under the name Mānavaka, at the completion of his second asaṃkhyeya, he encountered Dīpaṃkara Buddha and received his prophecy.
