[Vajji] Rendered here as "Avoid." The Shanjian lü states: "When the king of Vaiśālī and his queen had not yet ascended the throne, they went out of the gate to play with cowherd children, and trampled with their feet upon a cowherd's child. That child wept and told his parents: 'These children without father and mother trampled us with their feet.' The parents replied: 'You should each avoid them and go away.' Because of this playing place, it was named Vajji, hence translated as 'Avoid.' One hundred years after the Parinirvāṇa, the Vajji bhikṣus practiced the ten points arbitrarily, and Yaśas announced it to the seven hundred, going to Vaiśālī to reconvene the Vinaya and raise the faults of the Vajjis."
