【Kapotaka】 Or kapota; in the language of the Tang, it means pigeon. The Record of the Western Regions says: "In the past, the Buddha was preaching the Dharma to the assembly here. A trapper in the forest had been netting feathered creatures all day without catching anything. He came to where the Buddha was and cried out: 'Today the Tathāgata preaches the Dharma here, causing my netting to yield nothing at all. My wife and children are starving; what plan can there be?' The Tathāgata told him: 'Kindle a fire now, and I shall provide you with food.' At that moment, the Tathāgata transformed into a large pigeon and threw himself into the fire to die. The trapper took it home, and his wife and children ate it together. Afterwards, he returned to the Buddha's place. The Tathāgata used skillful means to embrace and transform him. Hearing the Dharma, the trapper repented and reformed, left home to cultivate and study, and immediately attained the holy fruit. Because of this, the monastery founded there was named the Pigeon Saṅghārāma."
