[Avīci] Here this is translated as 'uninterrupted'. The Sutra on the Samādhi of Contemplating the Buddha says: "'A' means without; 'vīci' means rescue." The Chengshi lun explains five kinds of uninterruption: first, uninterruption of the retribution of the realm, because upon discarding the body one immediately takes birth in this retribution; second, uninterruption of suffering, because therein there is no pleasure; third, uninterruption of time, because it is fixed at one kalpa; fourth, uninterruption of life, because therein it is not cut off; fifth, uninterruption of physical form, because just as the physical form of Avīci is eighty thousand yojanas in length and breadth, whether there is one person or many persons, they all fill it completely.
