【Kāla】The Kanzheng ji states: "This is 'real time'. That is to say, in the Vinaya, when admonishing the internal disciples by permitting food at the proper time and prohibiting food at improper times, there is indeed a real time. Therefore, the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra states: 'The formulating of precepts in the Vinaya is real within the conventional realm, but not real in the supreme truth.' The Treatise also asks: 'If untimely food, timely medicines, and timely robes are all kāla, why not say samaya?' It answers: 'This is spoken in the Vinaya; if white-robed laypeople are not permitted to hear it, how could non-Buddhists hear it and give rise to wrong views? In other sūtras, all are permitted to hear them; therefore samaya is used so that they will not give rise to wrong views.'"
