The śramaṇa Guṇarji was a native of the Western Regions. His attainment in the Way was broad, and his skillful guidance renewed daily. In the sixth year of the Daming era of the Song, the year renyin [462 CE], he arrived in Jingzhou and translated for the śramaṇa Shi Xuanchang: the Pusa nianfo sanmei jing (six fascicles) and the Wuliangmen pomo tuoluoni jing (one fascicle). Xuanchang edited and settled the phrasing and meaning, so that the style and import were graceful and precise. Moreover, when Xuanchang stretched out his hands, fragrance issued forth, and water flowed from the palms of his hands—something unfathomable to others.
