The brāhmaṇa Li Wuchan was a native of the Lampāka country in North India. Sharp and intelligent in mind and capacity, he had a comprehensive mastery of both internal and external learning, understanding both the Tang and Sanskrit languages thoroughly and without impediment. For the many sūtras translated by the Tripiṭaka masters Cintāmaṇi, Bodhiruci, and others, Li Wuchan provided the oral interpretation. In the third year of Shengli under Empress Wu, a gengzi year (700), for the sake of the Silla monk Myeonghyo, he translated the Bukong juansuo tuoluoni jing (Amoghapāśa-dhāraṇī-sūtra) in one fascicle at the Translation Hall of Foshouji Monastery. The monk Bolun served as scribe and composed the preface.
