Sūtra on the Parable of Smelting Gold; Sūtra on the Parable of the Wooden Pestle; Sūtra on the Illness of the Venerable One in the Goldsmith's Monastery; Sūtra on the Parable of the Flock of Sheep; Sūtra on Practicing the Middle Way; Sūtra on the Daughter of King Prasenajit Passing Away and Approaching the Buddha; Sūtra on a Monk Asking the Buddha About the Deaths of Many Upāsakas (the twenty-five sūtras from *Universal Giving* downward are all extracted from the *Saṃyuktāgama*);
Sūtra on the Monk Begging for Food; Sūtra on Upānanda; Sūtra on Wrong Livelihood; Sūtra on Monks Each Expressing Their Aspirations; Sūtra on Upānanda's Explanations; Sūtra on the Sickness of Monks; Sūtra on Fearlessness; Sūtra on the Parable of Poisonous Grass; Sūtra on the Parable of Poison; Sūtra on the Parable of the Horse (the ten sūtras from *Monk Begging for Food* downward are all extracted from the *Jātaka-sūtra*); Sūtra on the Parable of the Six Persons (extracted from the *Maiyi jing*); Sūtra on King Ajātaśatru Inquiring from Whence Anger Arises; Sūtra on the Great Monk; Sūtra on the Parable of Devadatta (the three sūtras including *Ajātaśatru* etc. are Hīnayāna excerpts); Sūtra on Anointing the Stūpa with Sandalwood (extracted from the *Baishe jing*); *Anityatā-sūtra*;
Sūtra on a Monk Seeking a Witness; Sūtra on the Impermanence of the Monk Abhanvārī; Sūtra on a Monk Asking the Buddha Why One Leaves the World to Study the Path; Sūtra on the Buddha Visiting a Sick Monk and Declining a Householder's Invitation; Sūtra on a Meditating Monk Passing Away and Being Reborn in Heaven; Sūtra on Heedlessness; Sūtra on Monks of Deep and Shallow Learning; Sūtra on the Monk Koṭi; Sūtra on the Monk Bali Slandering Pure Conduct; Sūtra on the Northern Worldly Profit; Sūtra on King Virūḍhaka Attacking the Śākyas; Sūtra on Faith Enabling the Crossing of a River; Sūtra on Sentient Beings Committing Evil in the Three Times; Sūtra on the Wise Monk; Sūtra on the Difficulty of Encountering the Preaching of the Dharma; Sūtra on Devadatta Inquiring About the Buddha's Complexion (the seventeen sūtras from the *Anityatā-sūtra* downward are all extracted from the *Udānavarga*); Sūtra on Morning Food (extracted from the *Yogācārabhūmi-sūtra*); Sūtra on the Parable of the River (*Xuhe*) (extracted from the *Za piyu jing*; the eighty-nine sūtras from *Demon Women* downward are all offshoot extracts culled from major scriptures; they were recorded in the catalogues of separate extracts, and are deleted here).
*Sūtra on the Samādhi of the Brightness Outshining the Sun*, two fascicles (second translation; also simply titled *Sūtra of the Brightness Outshining the Sun*, or in three fascicles; Master Dharmarakṣa previously produced it from Brahmaloka, but its phrasing and meaning were complicated and redundant; Nie Chengyuan's translation is detailed, orderly, with text and verses revised and superior to the earlier one; seen in the *Biographies of Eminent Monks* and Sengyou's catalogue).
*Sūtra on Upāli's Inquiries*, one fascicle (also titled *Sūtra of the Householder Nanda*, or *Nanda-sūtra*; first translation; seen in Changfang's catalogue).
The above two works in three fascicles are both extant.
The pure-faith layman Nie Chengyuan was clear-minded, perceptive, talented, devoted, and dedicated to the Dharma. When Master Dharmarakṣa translated scriptures, he frequently took part in emending sentences and phrases, as well as holding the brush to record the received meaning. Later, in the reign of Emperor Hui, he translated on his own two works, including the *Brightness Outshining the Sun*. Furthermore, catalogues such as Changfang's state that Chengyuan additionally translated the *Sūtra of Kāśyapa Questioning Ānanda*; this, however, is an extract from the *Za piyu jing* and not an independent translation. Moreover, the three catalogues of Fotiao, An Shigao from the Han dynasty, and this Chengyuan all record it, which is an egregious error.
*Sūtra of Bodhisattva Vimaladattā's Discriminating Eloquence*, one fascicle (second translation; of the same Indic original as Dharmarakṣa's *Li gou shi jing*; also titled *Distinguishing Recompense*; now compiled into the *Mahāratnakūṭa* as the thirty-third assembly; catalogues stating that it was translated by Zhu Fahu are mistaken; seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on Bodhisattvas Seeking the Fundamental Deeds of the Buddha*, one fascicle (sometimes without the character *Zhu* [諸]; an alternate translation of the 'Purifying Practice' chapter of the *Avataṃsaka*; seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on the Parinirvāṇa of Mañjuśrī*, one fascicle (seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on the Diverse Origins of Bodhisattvas*, one fascicle (sometimes without the character *Qi* [起]; seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva*, one fascicle (seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on Bodhisattvas Receiving the Fast*, one fascicle (second translation; seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Mahāvaipulya Sūtra on the Ten Stages of Bodhisattvas*, one fascicle (second translation; largely identical with minor differences compared to Dharmarakṣa's translation; seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on the Ten Abodes of the Dharma of Bodhisattvas*, one fascicle (an alternate translation of the 'Ten Abodes' chapter of the *Avataṃsaka*; third translation; seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Daśabhūmika-sūtra*, twelve fascicles (an alternate translation of the 'Ten Stages' chapter of the *Avataṃsaka*; second translation; seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on the Fifty Conditions of the Physical Body of Bodhisattvas*, one fascicle (second translation; largely identical with minor differences compared to the *Fifty Conditions of the Body Sūtra*; seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on the Bestowal of Prophecy to Avalokiteśvara*, one fascicle (second translation; seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on the Essential Assemblies of the Buddhas*, two fascicles (second translation; seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on the Vow of Bodhisattva Jātinshvara*, one fascicle (seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on the Method for Bodhisattvas to Seek the Five Eyes*, one fascicle (Sengyou omits the word *jing*; or titled *Text on the Five Eyes*; seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on the Six Dharmas of Bodhisattva Practice*, one fascicle (seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on the Initial Stage of Bodhisattvas*, one fascicle (seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on the Stages of the Ten Paths of Bodhisattvas*, one fascicle (some state this is the earlier translation *Bodhisattva Ten Stages*; seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on the Debate Between Mañjuśrī and the Lady Liyi Closely Resembling the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa*, one fascicle (seen in Changfang's catalogue; examining the canon at present, the lower fascicle of the *Sūtra on the Essential Assemblies of the Buddhas* contains the matter of the debate with the Lady Liyi, so it is suspected to be an extract from that scripture);
*Miscellaneous Methods of Bodhisattva Practice*, one fascicle (seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Four Dharmas Practiced by Bodhisattvas*, one fascicle (seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on the Past Lives of Bodhisattvas*, one fascicle (seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Sūtra on Mañjuśrī's Pure Discipline*, one fascicle (second translation; slightly different from Dharmarakṣa's; seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Ritual Text for the Solitary Conferral of the Bodhisattva Precepts at the Platform*, one fascicle (seen in Changfang's catalogue);
*Method for Bodhisattva Repentance*, one fascicle (stated to be an alternate translation text; seen in Changfang's catalogue).
The above twenty-four works in thirty-six fascicles (the six works in six fascicles up to the *Bodhisattva Receiving the Fast* are extant; the eighteen works in thirty fascicles from the *Mahāvaipulya* downward are missing texts).
The pure-faith layman Nie Daozhen was the son of Chengyuan. Both father and son possessed pure perspicacity and took translation as their profession. From the beginning of the Taikang era of Emperor Wu to the end of the Yongjia era of Emperor Huai, during that time, besides asking questions, receiving instruction, and serving as brush-scribes for Dharmarakṣa, after Dharmarakṣa passed away Daozhen then independently translated twenty-four works, including the *Vimaladattā's Discriminating Eloquence*. Truly worthy of being considered a disciple of Master Dharmarakṣa, he genuinely lived up to the name; he was rather adept at composition, and his literary phrasing was distinct and luminous.
Furthermore, catalogues such as Changfang's include another twenty-nine sūtras, also stating they were produced by Daozhen. Because these are all offshoot extracts and excerpts, they have now been deleted and are not retained.
*Sūtra on Bodhisattvas Offering Gifts, Visiting Stūpas, and Generating Vows and Mindful Recitation*; *Sūtra on Bodhisattva Siṃhavikrāntagāmin Inquiring About the Generation of the Mind*; *Sūtra on the Three Dharmas of Bodhisattvas* (the three sūtras including *Bodhisattvas Offering Gifts* etc. are all extracted from the *Mañjuśrī-buddhakṣetra-pariśuddhi-sūtra*); *Method of Bodhisattva Generosity and Repentance* (extracted from the *Viniścayaviniścaya-sūtra*); *Sūtra on the Tathāgata's Admonition of Bodhisattva Īśvararāja* (also called *Bodhisattva Admonishing the Body and Being at Ease*); *Sūtra on Bodhisattvas Guiding and Revealing Practices*; *Sūtra on the Time When Bodhisattvas Generate the Mind*; [...]
