The items of teachings and so forth above: in the third year of the Kaicheng era of the Great Tang, in the beginning of the eighth month, having arrived at the Grand Superior Prefecture of Yangzhou, I toured various temples to seek them out, and completed their copying. I first entrusted them to Tomo no Sukune Sugao, assistant administrative officer under the embassy, whose ship has already delivered them to Enryaku-ji. However, they have not yet been fully catalogued and reported to the government. Now, I respectfully submit the detailed catalogue and numbers above.
The aforementioned sūtras, śāstras, teachings, commentaries and subcommentaries, biographies, as well as the various maṇḍalas, altar images, and so forth: having humbly received the grace of our realm, I accompanied the embassy to the Tang, and subsequently, at Yangzhou, Wutai Shan, Chang'an, and other places, sought masters and studied the Dharma over the course of nine years. What I was able to search for and obtain according to my capacity has been respectfully detailed above. Respectfully recorded and submitted, with utmost respect.
Presented on the […] day, […] month of the fourteenth year of Jōwa by Ennin, Monk of the Dharma-Transmitting Lamp Rank, Inquirer of the Tiantai School Who Entered Tang China.
