The Buddha told the great king: "The bodhisattva mahāsattvas rely on the dharma of the five kṣāntis as their cultivation, namely: the subduing kṣānti, the faithful kṣānti, the compliant kṣānti, and the non-arising kṣānti—each possessing upper, middle, and lower [grades]—and the cessation kṣānti, which has upper and lower [grades]; these are called the bodhisattva's cultivation of the Prajñāpāramitā. Good son! At the initial stage of subduing kṣānti, one gives rise to the lineage of practice and cultivates the practices of the ten abidings. At the sign of first producing the aspiration, there are sentient beings as numerous as the sands of the Ganges who, upon seeing the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha, produce the ten faiths, namely: faith, mindfulness, diligence, wisdom, concentration, non-retrogression, precept, vow, dharma-protection, and dedication. Endowed with these ten minds, they are able to transform sentient beings in a small measure, surpassing all good stages of the two vehicles; this is the initial nurturing of the mind for the bodhisattva, serving as the womb of the noble ones."
