"Furthermore, the bodhisattva mahāsattva of the Joyous Ground transcends the ground of foolish beings, is born into the household of the Tathāgata, and abides in equanimous patience. Initial signless wisdom illuminates the ultimate truth: single-character equanimity, neither characteristic nor signless. Severing all ignorance, it extinguishes the greed of the three realms, so that future immeasurable births and deaths will never arise again. With great compassion as the foremost, they give rise to great vows, and with expedient wisdom they cultivate immeasurable excellent practices in thought after thought—neither realizing nor not realizing, because they study everything comprehensively; neither abiding nor non-abiding, because they head toward omniscience; walking in birth and death, because Māra cannot move them; free from self and what belongs to self, because they have no fear; devoid of marks of self and other, because they constantly transform sentient beings; and by sovereign power of vows, being born in pure lands. Good sons! This wisdom of initial awakening is neither suchness nor wisdom, neither existent nor non-existent, without dual characteristics, possessing wonderful expedient function; neither inverted nor abiding, neither moving nor still, free in benefiting both self and others, like water and waves being neither one nor different. The wisdom that gives rise to the perfections is also neither one nor different. Over four asaṃkhyeya kalpas, fully cultivating a million vows of practice, the bodhisattva of this ground has no karmic habits of the three realms and creates no new karma, being born by virtue of vows in accord with the power of wisdom. In thought after thought, they constantly practice the dāna-pāramitā: giving, pleasant speech, beneficial action, and common cause. Vast and pure, they are well able to abide and benefit sentient beings.
