"Great King! After my parinirvāṇa, the fourfold assembly of disciples, all kings, princes, and the hundred officials are precisely those who should uphold and protect the Three Jewels; yet they will destroy them themselves, like worms within a lion's body feeding on the lion's own flesh, and not like non-Buddhists [doing so]. Those who destroy my Dharma will incur great blame: the true Dharma will decline and wane, the people will lack proper conduct, evil deeds will gradually increase, their lifespans will decrease day by day, there will no longer be filial sons, the six relations will be in discord, devas and nāgas will not grant protection, evil ghosts and evil dragons will come daily to inflict harm, and disasters and anomalies will follow one after another, running rampant. They will fall into the hells, the animal realm, and the hungry ghosts; and even if they gain human birth, they will be destitute, base, and defective in their faculties. Just as a shadow follows a form, just as an echo responds to a sound, or just as when someone writes at night and the fire goes out but the characters remain—such is the retribution for destroying the Dharma.
