Sūtra: 'Subhūti, to summarize…' up to '…boundless merit.'
Exposition: The third is praising the Dharma and its cultivation. First, praising the excellence of the Dharma; later, praising the person who cultivates it. Within the first, there are again two: first, the direct praise; later, reinforcing it. This is the first. The treatise says: 'inconceivable' means it is only self-realized; 'incomparable' means there is nothing equal or superior to it. This is not what can be conceived by bodhisattvas of the ten bhūmis; as the Lotus Sūtra says: 'Only a Buddha together with a Buddha can exhaustively fathom it.' The commentary on that sūtra says: 'Manifesting equally, it is difficult to fathom.' 'Fathoming' refers to worldly phenomena such as thinking and investigating minds; not being within their sphere is termed 'inconceivable'. Now the sūtra further adds 'boundless merit', which applies to both places: 'inconceivable, boundless merit' and 'incomparable, boundless merit'. Below, that treatise explains 'what actions does one accomplish' in a verse:
