2.9

經。須菩提又念至無壽者相　演曰。第三明如忍差別。即種類忍。論云何者種類忍。謂極苦忍相續苦忍。此意極苦忍者。謂割截身分。相續忍者。謂於五百世作忍辱仙等。非唯一忍名為差別。生生常行前後相似名種類忍。論中欲辨忍差別故。更舉割截理實屬前。言忍辱仙者。慈悲人也。

The Sūtra [states]: "Subhūti, I also recall ... up to ... had no mark of a living being." / Exposition: Third, clarifying the distinctions corresponding to patience, which are the varieties of patience. The treatise states: "What are the varieties of patience? They are the patience of extreme suffering and the patience of continuous suffering." The meaning of this is: the patience of extreme suffering refers to the dismemberment of the body; continuous patience refers to being an ascetic of patience for five hundred lifetimes, and so forth. It is not called a distinction merely on account of a single patience; constantly practicing life after life, with prior and subsequent being similar, is called the varieties of patience. In the treatise, wishing to distinguish the differences of patience, it again raises dismemberment; in principle it actually belongs to the preceding. As for the "ascetic of patience," he is a person of loving-kindness and compassion.
