Sūtra: Because there is no self, no person, no sentient being, and no longevity. Exposition: This explains the reason for equality. According to other recensions of the sūtra and the commentary, it should say: "Because of being free from self, person, sentient being, and longevity, one attains equal anuttarā samyaksambodhi." In this text, it is abridged. This treatise says: "It reveals the mark of equality of bodhi within the dharmas of saṃsāra." Exposition: The realized tathatā is endowed with virtues numerous as the sands of the Ganges; when bound, it is called the tathāgatagarbha; when freed from bondage, it is called the dharmakāya. The stages are distinct and the names are different, but the substance has no distinction. Self, person, and sentient beings are dharmas of saṃsāra; the absence of that self and the rest is called the dharmakāya. Therefore, it is said to be "the mark of equality within the dharmas of saṃsāra." The commentary's verse on "pure and equal in its intrinsic mark" explains the intention: because the pure and equal true self-substance of the selflessness of dharmas has nothing superior to it, it is called unexcelled.
