Sūtra: "Why is this? […] then they are not a bodhisattva."
Exposition: Replying to the question on subjugation: if one abides in the true path and attains nothing to be attained, then there are no marks of a self, a person, a sentient being, and so forth; this is a true bodhisattva. Now, admonishing those before the grounds who wish to advance toward realizing that true non-abiding: they ought to be like those who truly do not abide, not having such notions, and thereby subjugate [the mind]. The treatise states: "If a bodhisattva gives rise to notions of sentient beings and so forth, this reveals the grasping of ātmagrāha or its dormant tendencies." The meaning is: giving rise to notions of sentient beings reveals the active manifestation of the conceptual discrimination of ātmagrāha. Even if there is no active manifestation, because seeds exist it is also called ātmagrāha. When the non-learners of the two vehicles reach this stage, although they are without the self of persons, they still have the self of dharmas. Because of such active manifestations and seeds, they do not truly abide in the path; therefore, they should subjugate them and enter true abiding.
