The Sūtra [states]: "Why is this? ... up to ... would have generated anger and resentment." / Exposition: This is the counter-demonstration. First it queries, and afterwards it explains. For what reason is it known that at that time there was no notion of a self and so forth? The query asks comprehensively about the notions, but the explanation only displays the first, by way of ellipsis. Anger arises from the view of a self; if there were a view of a self, one would generate anger and resentment. Resentment is established based on anger; harboring malice without letting go and forming enmity is its nature, which is a secondary affliction. Since anger and resentment were absent, it is clear that there was no notion of a self. For this reason, when practicing the perfection of patience, there is no notion of a self and so forth.
